News Collaboration is key in the wake of the Christchurch terror attacks

image

The Christchurch Foundation has been working in collaboration with Christchurch Muslim community leaders, representatives of the families directly affected by the terror attacks, Victim Support and other charitable organisations, to develop an agreed approach for managing donations received.

The agreed rationale is that The Christchurch Foundation will focus on mid and long-term assistance with the funds raised in the Our People, Our City Fund.

We have yet to have a detailed conversation with the families and the community about what the funds gifted to us will be targeted to, it’s simply too soon.

What we know from overseas experience that one of the most important roles of a community foundation, in situations such as this, is to be responsible and flexible to the community’s needs. This means allowing the time and space for the community to learn and express where they feel the greatest needs are, which usually evolve over time.

For those individuals, families or groups who have an immediate need for assistance, please contact Victim Support: 0800 VICTIM (0800 842 846) or www.victimsupport.org.nz.
